Hi, I’m considering installing air conditioning as summers seem to be getting warmer, especially after improving insulation and windows in my house.

For those who already have AC, is it actually worth it in terms of comfort vs running costs? Do you use it often enough to justify the installation?
Also, are there specific systems that work better in UK homes, or is it better to look into alternatives like ventilation or heat pumps with cooling? Would appreciate any real experiences.

Honestly, I was in exactly the same situation — upgraded insulation, new windows, house got super efficient… and then started overheating like crazy in summer.

I went for AC last year and I’m not gonna lie, it’s one of the best upgrades I’ve done. The comfort difference is massive. When it’s 28°C+ outside and everyone’s struggling, I’ve got the house sitting nicely at 21–22°C and actually sleeping properly.

Running costs aren’t as bad as people think either. Modern units are pretty efficient – I only run it when needed (mainly evenings and really hot days), and it didn’t blow up my bills like I expected. Definitely worth it for the comfort alone.
In the UK, split systems work really well for houses — quiet, efficient, and you can control specific rooms. I did look at heat pumps with cooling, but for straightforward cooling, AC just does the job better and simpler.

If your house is already well insulated, I’d say it’s 100% worth it. Funny enough, the more efficient your home is, the more you actually need cooling in summer.

I have air conditioning together with a Daikin heat pump, and the savings on my energy bills are such that before I had AC, I used to pay roughly the same for heating during the winter season as I now pay for the entire year — including cooling the house with air conditioning in summer.

    Hi everyone,

We installed air conditioning mainly after a few really hot summers, and honestly, the comfort difference is huge on those peak days. Sleeping becomes much easier, and the house cools down quickly in the evening.
That said, we don’t run it constantly — mostly just during heatwaves. Because of that, the running costs have been quite reasonable, but the upfront installation wasn’t cheap.
From what I’ve seen in UK-style homes, split systems tend to be the most practical if you only want cooling for a few rooms. Whole-house systems or using heat pumps with cooling can make sense, but it really depends on how much you expect to use it.
I think whether it’s “worth it” comes down to how badly the heat affects you personally. For occasional use, it feels like a luxury that you’re very glad to have when needed, rather than something that changes everyday living all year round.

    Hi,

In my opinion, one thing that often gets overlooked is that it’s not just about a few very hot days each year, but about sleep quality and being able to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature over longer periods. In well-insulated homes, heat can build up over several consecutive days, and simply opening windows at night is not always enough.
For a long time, we managed with external blinds, ventilation, and airing the house in the evenings. It helped, but during the recent heatwaves the bedrooms still became uncomfortably warm. After installing air conditioning, the biggest benefit wasn’t even the cooler temperatures during the day—it was being able to sleep comfortably at night.
If your main concern is staying comfortable during the summer, I personally support installing air conditioning. In our case, it has worked very well, especially at night, when maintaining a pleasant bedroom temperature significantly improves sleep quality. We don’t run it every day throughout the summer, but during warmer periods it makes a real difference and helps keep the house comfortable even during extended heatwaves.

Hi, For me, the biggest surprise was how little I actually needed to use it to notice a real difference. Running it for just a few hours during the hottest part of the day is often enough to keep the house comfortable, especially in a well-insulated home. If I had to make the decision again, I’d install it without hesitation.

    Hi,

For a long time, I thought air conditioning in the UK was an unnecessary expense. It seemed hard to justify installing it for just a handful of hot days each year. After the last few summers, though, I completely changed my mind.
The biggest difference for me was while working from home. When the house became too warm, it was difficult to concentrate, and even in the evening the rooms would still hold the heat. Now, when the temperature starts to climb, I simply turn the air conditioning on for a while and the whole house feels much more comfortable.
I don’t use it every day throughout the summer, but when I do need it, I’m always glad it’s there. For me, it’s not really about saving money—it’s about comfort and enjoying being at home. If I had to make the decision again, I wouldn’t hesitate to install it.
