Hi, I’m considering installing a greywater recycling system mainly to reduce water usage, but I’m not sure how practical it is day-to-day.

For those who have one, do you actually notice a meaningful reduction in water bills? And is the system easy to manage, or does it require frequent checks and maintenance?

Would be great to hear how it works in real life, not just on paper.

HI,
A friend of mine has a system like this and said it does save a bit on water bills, especially in summer for watering the garden and flushing toilets.

But from what he told me, it’s definitely not completely “install it and forget about it” 😅 You still need to check the filters sometimes and make sure everything stays clean and works properly.

I think it probably makes the most sense in a bigger house with higher water usage.

That’s pretty much the impression I’ve had as well. It seems like greywater recycling is one of those systems that makes more sense from a sustainability point of view than as a way to dramatically cut household bills.
What I’m most curious about is the long-term maintenance. Checking filters occasionally doesn’t sound like a big issue, but I wonder whether people run into problems after a few years with pumps, tanks, or other components needing replacement.
It would be interesting to hear from someone who has been using a system for five years or more and whether they would choose to install it again.

In terms of maintenance, it has been easier than I expected. We have the system serviced periodically, clean the filters when recommended, and that’s about it. We haven’t experienced any major failures or unexpected repair costs so far.
