Are Greywater Recycling Systems Actually Worth Installing?

Hi everyone,
I’ve recently started reading about greywater recycling systems and wondering if they’re actually practical for a normal family home in the UK.

Does anyone here use one for toilets, garden watering, or anything similar? I’m curious how much water you realistically save and whether the maintenance is a hassle long term.

Also wondering if it’s something that only makes sense in new builds, or if people have successfully added it during renovations too.

Hi,I’ve had a greywater system for a few years now, mainly for flushing toilets. It works well, but I’d only really recommend doing it during a renovation or in a new build, because adding the extra pipework later can get expensive and messy.

It definitely saves a decent amount of water, especially with a bigger family. Maintenance hasn’t been too bad either — mostly just cleaning the filter now and then.

For me it’s been more about wasting less water than saving loads of money.

I have a similar view. If you’re planning a major renovation, it’s worth considering, but as a standalone retrofit it often takes a long time to pay for itself. The environmental benefits are real, though, especially when it’s used regularly for toilet flushing.

I considered installing a greywater recycling system, but after looking at the costs I decided against it. In a typical family home, the savings on water bills just weren’t significant enough to justify the additional installation costs and ongoing maintenance.
That said, I think it makes much more sense if you’re building a new home or already carrying out a major renovation where the plumbing is being replaced. Otherwise, the payback period can be quite a long one.
