From my own experience and from friends, I’d definitely recommend external shading over anything inside. We installed screen blinds on our large west-facing windows and it made a huge difference in summer — much cooler inside, but still plenty of natural light.
Some friends have external roller shutters and they work even better for heat, but for me they make the house a bit too dark during the day.
Pergolas also work really well if the problem is mostly with big patio windows.
If I had to choose again:
– screens = best if you want light + cooler rooms,
– facade blinds = best overall balance,
– roller shutters = best for maximum heat reduction.
