If you have a good, well-draining plot of land (sand, no high groundwater level), there’s really no need to overcomplicate things — you simply go with a small wastewater treatment plant and for years you basically have the sewage problem off your mind. In everyday use, that’s the biggest difference: you don’t think about emptying tanks, you don’t monitor levels, it just works.
If you have clay soil, poor percolation conditions, or a high groundwater level, then a traditional drain-field system usually doesn’t work well or starts causing issues over time. In that case, you’re left with either a septic tank or more advanced biological/hybrid systems, but then the solution really needs to be carefully matched to the site conditions and budget.
A septic tank means ongoing maintenance and logistics — regular pumping, monitoring levels, and planning ahead. At first it seems like a cheap and simple option, but in the long run it becomes inconvenient and costly with normal household water usage.
A treatment plant, on the other hand, costs more upfront, but after installation it essentially shifts into an “install and forget” mode, where you only deal with occasional servicing and infrequent sludge removal.
