Hi, I’m looking into improving insulation in an older property and trying to figure out where to start for the best results. There seem to be a lot of options — loft insulation, cavity wall, internal or external wall insulation — and I’m not sure which gives the biggest impact.
For those who’ve done thermal retrofitting, what made the biggest difference in terms of comfort and energy bills? Also, were there any issues during or after installation that are worth knowing about?
Any advice or real experiences would be really helpful.

In my case, the biggest difference came from insulating the attic and sealing up various drafts. The house is from the 1970s, and before that you could really feel the cold coming from the ceiling, plus there were drafts around the windows and the attic hatch. After adding insulation to the attic floor, the energy bills went down a bit, but the biggest improvement was overall comfort — the house stopped losing heat so quickly in the evenings.Later on, I also insulated the walls, but honestly the effect wasn’t as dramatic compared to the cost. The walls did stop feeling freezing cold in winter though. A friend of mine went with internal wall insulation and later had problems with moisture in the corners, so it’s definitely important to pay attention to proper installation and ventilation.
From my experience:
* start with the roof/attic,
* then deal with drafts and air leaks,
* and only after that move on to the bigger and more expensive things like wall insulation.If you can, get a thermal imaging inspection or an energy audit done as well — a lot of the time it turns out the heat is escaping from completely different places than you expected.

We had a different situation because our house is an older solid-wall property, so loft insulation and draught-proofing were only part of the solution. The biggest improvement for us came after installing external wall insulation.
Before the work, the walls would feel cold even when the heating was running, and the temperature dropped quite quickly once the heating was turned off. After the insulation was installed, the house felt much more stable — the rooms stayed warmer for longer and the walls no longer felt cold to the touch.
The main thing I would say is that the quality of installation matters a lot. It’s not just about putting insulation on the walls; the detailing around windows, doors, corners and ventilation needs to be done properly. Poor workmanship can create problems later, especially with moisture.
The process itself was more disruptive than loft insulation, as it changes the outside appearance of the property and involves scaffolding, but for us the improvement in comfort made it worthwhile. The reduction in energy use was noticeable, although the biggest benefit has probably been how much more comfortable the house feels day to day.
